The Cup Fund - A new fund to scale paper cup recycling

About the fund

The fund comes from the 5p cup charge voluntarily introduced by Starbucks in 2018. It aims to significantly increase the level of paper cup recycling in at least 10 locations across the UK.

  • The fund will provide one year of grant funding of between £50,000 to £100,000 to each successful project. We’re looking for ambitious, large scale projects that will transform cup recycling in high footfall areas.

  • Grants will help you to boost cup recycling facilities in your area by providing funding, expertise, high quality behaviour change communications and support with measurement and evaluation.

  • Successful projects will be selected by an independent panel consisting of: Jaz Rabadia, UK senior manager sustainability and energy, Starbucks; Trewin Restorick, CEO of Hubbub; The Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC); the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM); and sustainability communications expert Sam Williams, Director of Barley Communications.

  • Successful applicants will be able to demonstrate ambitious, robust and long-term plans to boost cup recycling.

  • Projects will need to start by September 2019 at the latest.

  • The payment schedule is 50% up front, 35% at 6 months and 15% on completion of the project.

  • We’ll be asking for milestone reports in January 2020 and July 2020, detailing how many cups have been recycled, levels of contamination and wider promotional activities.

  • The Cup Fund is endorsed by the main UK paper cup recyclers – James Cropper, ACE UK and DS Smith.
